Nikon has announced five new professional-quality SLR lenses. The two zoom lenses and three super-telephoto primes are compatible with all F-mount Nikon cameras, including both DX-format models and the company's new FX full-frame format, as well as Nikon's 35mm film SLRs. All five optics use Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat to reduce flare and ghosting.

The two new zoom lenses are the wide AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED and the standard AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. Both incorporate Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements to minimize chromatic aberration, as well as aspherical elements for reducing other optical flaws. To achieve fast, quiet autofocus operation, they employ Nikon's Silent Wave motor.

The three new super-telephoto optics are the AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR, AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4G ED VR, and AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4G ED VR. The lenses have magnesium die-cast barrels to achieve a combination of light weight and durable, dust- and moisture-resistant construction. Each lens incorporates three ED elements, as well as a protective meniscus-type element that minimizes the ghosting caused by light reflecting between a camera's sensor and a typical flat protective glass element.

The telephoto lenses implement Nikon's VR II vibration reduction, which supports the Tripod stabilization mode available in Nikon's new D3 and D300 SLRs. Tripod mode reduces vibration caused by mirror slap when the camera's shutter is released.

Controls available on the barrels of the three primes include a Focus Preset function that instantly recalls a preset focal point, a focus limiter that restricts AF-servo movement to a specific shooting-distance range, an AF-L switch for locking focus, and an AF-ON switch that engages the autofocus.

All of the new lenses will be available in November 2007. The 14-24mm will be priced at $1799.95 and the 24-70mm at $1699.95. The 400mm, 500mm, and 600mm lenses carry retail prices of $8,799.95, $7,899.95, and $9499.95, respectively.
